It can be overwhelming parenting an anxious child.

Having some anxiety can actually help children perform at their best. But if anxiety becomes too intense, if it begins to cause distress, if it lasts for a long time or if it begins to interfere with daily life or relationships, then it’s a time to think about getting support.

Children might experience the physical feelings of anxiety without even realising they are worried.

They may experience..

  • a faster heart rate

  • faster breathing,

  • muscle tension,

  • sweating,

  • hot/cold flushes,

  • shaking, trembling,

  • nausea,

  • butterflies in the stomach.

And even so, they might say nothing is wrong! Some of the most common signs are a child complaining of feeling “sick” or having a “sore tummy”, sleep changes, and irritibility.

What's causing it? Research tells us that anxiety can be caused by one, or a combination of factors. These include genetic factors, temperament, ongoing stress, family background, physical health issues, or a traumatic event. One thing is for sure. It's not anyone's fault when they have anxiety.

Although we can’t prevent the onset of anxiety, we can treat anxiety disorders and equip you and your child with the skills to manage and overcome their worries and fears.
